About Us

Welcome to St Albans Dental Centre

At St Albans Dental Centre we currently have six dentists and three oral health therapists working in our practice. You can choose any dentist or hygienist to look after your dental needs and we will do our best to arrange an appointment with them as soon as possible to suit your schedule. We would generally recommend that you see your dentist and hygienist regularly as this forms the basis of our preventative approach to dentistry. After your initial visit your dentist and hygienist will be able to assess what they feel is an appropriate recall period and assign these to you.

We offer all aspects of general and cosmetic dentistry. We place a great importance on producing high quality work and also have an emphasis on prevention as we feel it is in the patients’ best interest in the long run. Oral Surgery (wisdom tooth removal) is also one of our strengths.

We are a warm, dynamic team who understand your need to receive exceptional service and treatment. Contact our friendly team to arrange a consultation and experience quality dental and personal care.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding with a surgical or invasive procedure, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Dr Peter Platts

Born and schooled in Christchurch, I went to University in 1973 where I completed a B.Sc in Human Physiology and then a B.D.S. in Dentistry. After graduating I headed off to the U.K. for five years where I worked as a Dentist, gaining valuable experience in sedation dentistry and oral surgery.

In 1984 a friend and I kitted out an old steel yacht with the intention to sail back to N.Z. via South Africa. After a couple of years on the yacht and getting as far as Turkey, we parted company and I headed back to New Zealand.

After locuming for two years I bought Jack Hayman's practice here in St. Albans, which we renamed St Albans Dental Centre. Over the years the practice has grown and in 2000 we built our present purpose built building to accommodate that growth.

I am married and have four lovely daughters and a dog. My interests include skiing, diving, multisport, music and the great outdoors generally.

Dr Andrew Paul

I really enjoy being part of a diverse and talented team at St Albans Dental Centre. I graduated from Otago in 2009, then worked for one year at Christchurch Hospital under the Maxillofacial team loving the surgical exposure.

I then moved to Australia for four years and worked privately in a mix of hospital and general dentistry taking in the wider experience it offered. With the city well on its way to being fixed, I moved back in 2015. It’s great to be back and part of a new vibrant city. With the mountains in winter and the ocean in summer I can’t think of a better place to be.

I have a strong interest in restorative dentistry, supplemented by sedation when needed. Preventive dentistry is fundamental in our practice and I feel with the team we have, we strive in providing long term oral health.

I think dentistry will be different for every person. I enjoy working with people to make a personalised treatment plan that makes you smile.

Dr Jessica Winter (Hindson)

After graduating from the University of Otago with Credit in 2009, I moved back to my hometown of Christchurch.

I started working at St Albans Dental Centre in 2012, and really enjoy the team environment we have here. I am currently working part time after the arrival of my son.

My passions in dentistry include cosmetic work, crown, bridge and implants, as well as providing maintenance care for my regular patients. I believe in minimal intervention wherever possible.

Outside of work I love running, travel, cooking and spending time with my family.

Dr Sarah Norton

I graduated from the University of Otago with Credit in 2010 and spent my first year after graduation working in private practice in my home town of Oamaru. In 2012 I made the move across the ditch to work for a large group practice on the Gold Coast. After getting married in May 2015, my husband and I took time off to travel around Europe before moving back to Christchurch to be closer to our family and friends.

I am passionate about providing excellent quality dental care in a friendly, gentle and honest manner. I feel very fortunate to work with such a great team here at St Albans Dental Centre.

In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit at the gym, spending time outdoors and learning to play the guitar.

Dr Kristine Bettle

I began my working life as a registered nurse in the operating theatre before making the change to a career in dentistry. I graduated from Griffith University in Queensland 2011 as Dux of my class.

I really enjoy dentistry and love going to work. I have interests in Cerec crown work and reducing a patient's anxiety through sedation. My experience as a nurse has given me a unique perspective into providing a caring and gentle approach to patient care.

I work part time at St Albans Dental Centre and am also a mum of two very busy pre-schoolers.
In our spare time, my husband and I enjoy the outdoors with our family. Other interests include cooking, Pilates and learning German.

Dr Narelle Wu - Christchurch Dentist | St Albans Dental CentreDr Narelle Wu

I graduated from University of Otago in 2012 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. For the past 5 years, I have been working in New Plymouth.  I worked for 2 of those years part time at Taranaki Base Hospital as a Dental House Surgeon where I assisted the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.

As a Dentist I love getting to know the patients and create a relaxing and friendly environment. I like to plan practical treatment for each patient’s individual dental needs and financial capabilities, combined with my own knowledge and strength.

I believe in minimal intervention dentistry and striving as close to perfection in both function and aesthetics. I see dentistry as a brilliant combination of surgery, engineering and art with prosthodontics and oral surgery as being my forte.

In my spare time I love surfing, skiing and playing touch rugby. Also relaxing with my family.

I suppose to sum me up I am obsessed with living days to the full. Enjoying everyone and everything to the best of my ability.

Ellen Dawson -Dental Hygienist | St Albans Dental Centre Ellen Dawson

I qualified from the University of Otago in 2010 as an Oral Health Therapist. After graduating I worked in Melbourne Australia for a few years before returning back to Christchurch where I have been practicing for 4 years. I joined the team at St Albans Dental Centre in March 2018.

My main aim is to help people maintain a clean healthy mouth that they will love, so I’m here to teach you a few tricks to keep things in prime condition at home. We want patients to love their teeth as much as we do, and anything we can do to get you closer to your goal, by getting rid of bacteria that causes bad breath, discoloured teeth and sore bleeding gums is what we are here to achieve.

I am originally from Mount Maunganui, so I love any sports linked to water. I also enjoy mountain bike riding and am currently attempting to learn the guitar.

Ruby Zhao

Oral Health Therapist

I studied Bachelor of Oral Health at University of Otago, and graduated as an Oral Health Therapist in 2016.

I enjoy helping both children and adult in obtaining and maintaining a good oral health. I believe oral health is greatly linked to the general body health, therefore it is important to promote and advocate knowledge in this area. In order to help build a better quality of life.

Hence I choose to be part of this lovely team at St Albans Dental, and I also practice at community dental clinics serving children under 18, as well as the University of Canterbury dental clinic serving university students. This allows me to use my profession to its full potential.

Lisa Yee

Hi, I’m Lisa. I graduated with a Bachelor of Oral Health from the University of Otago in 2014 and am a registered Dental Hygienist. Being an active member of the New Zealand Dental Hygienist Association helps keep me up-to-date with the latest technology and best practice procedures to ensure you receive the best care. I have a firm belief that prevention is better than cure. I work alongside you to help prevent gum disease, maintain healthy gums and teeth and help prevent tooth decay.

In my spare time I love looking after animals, being out in nature and sometimes enjoy running.

Monica Ragg

Monica started off her career in dentistry working as a dental assistant in the United Kingdom after moving there from Eastern Europe. Then she continued her career by training in Oral Health Science at the University of Essex in 2011. Following her graduation as Dental Hygienist she worked in several dental practices around London.

Two years ago she and her family moved to New Zealand and, after spending some time in Wellington, she joined our team here at St Albans Dental Centre.
