Anxious Patients
At St Albans Dental Centre we understand many people experience some anxiety at having to visit their dentist. This level of anxiety can vary from very mild to the extreme. For those with mild anxiety, gentle reassurance in conjunction with topical anaesthetic (numbing paste) prior to the careful administration of the local anaesthetic (an injection) is often enough.
With moderate anxiety a sedative (hypnovel) tablet may be all that is needed to help a patient through a procedure.
In cases of severe anxiety we would recommend sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry involves the intravenous administration of a sedative drug (hypnovel) to relax the patient to a level where dentistry is possible. Once relaxed and not aware of their surroundings, local anaesthetic is placed to numb the teeth to be treated. The patient generally recalls nothing or very little of the procedure and often think they have been asleep through the treatment.
Sedation dentistry is very useful if a patient hasn't been for a long time, is nervous and wants to catch up on their dental health in one visit.
We have outline these various options below so you can have a full understanding on how we can help and assess which option is best for you. For further information, contact our understanding team to arrange a consultation.
Sedation Dentistry
If you are apprehensive, or don't want to know too much about what is going on while your teeth are being attended to, then sedation dentistry is a wise option for you. Whether you are receiving fillings, hygiene treatment or oral surgery, consider sedation dentistry to relieve any nervousness or fear which you may associate with dental work.
Sedation dentistry involves the administration of a drug called Hypnovel ( Midazolam). This will relax you and allow the dentist or hygienist to get on with the job in hand.
Advantages:
You can have your dentistry done without worrying. You will remember little, if anything at all, about the procedure
Disadvantages:
- Extra expense.
- The need to bring someone in with you to accompany you home after the procedure is complete.
